5 Signs Your Automatic Transmission Has a Problem

In a car, you get two kinds of transmissions, manual and automatic, the latter is what we will focus on today. Although both come with their fair share of problems, automatic transmission problems are usually more expensive to repair. This is why you need to be aware of the common problems that may occur so you can be aware of them before the problem gets worse.

Shaking in Gear

As your car moves from great to gear, it should be a smooth process, however, when you feel a shaking sensation, this indicates that there is a problem. Although the problem may seem insignificant at first, it will gradually get worse meaning it will be more expensive and difficult to fix. When you feel this sensation in your car, it is best to get it checked out as soon as you can.

Not Engaging in Gear

When you put your car into drive or reverse it should respond immediately, when you start to see a delay or when it doesn’t even respond at all, then you may have an issue. When this happens it could indicate that you have a problem with your fluid, it may have become thick and degraded. This is where a fluid exchange could help.

However, this is not always the case, resetting the car’s computer could help the problem too. To do this, you just need to disconnect the battery for around 30 minutes giving the car time to rest. If this doesn’t fix the problem, it is time to get a professional to take a look.

Unusual Noises

Whether it is whining, humming or clunking noise coming from your car, it is definitely not something that should be ignored. These sounds will usually sound like they are coming from the underside of the car and although they could just be something minor, equally, it could indicate something major so it is best to get it checked out to be sure.

One reason for these noises is that the fluid could be breaking down. The fluid plays a crucial role in helping the car to run since it helps to keep the gears and many other components lubricated. Over time the fluid loses its protective properties causing a lot of friction in the vehicle, which is what can cause the noise. Before the problem gets worse, it is best to get it checked out and fixed by a professional.

Burning Smell

Your car should never smell like it’s burning if you smell this, it is definitely something to be concerned about. The most common reason for this smell is overheated fluid in the transmission. The reason it heats up is that over time, its properties diminish, meaning the car is more vulnerable to friction. This friction is never good as it can cause the parts to break down and eventually result in a complete transmission breakdown which is very expensive to fix.

Slipping Gears

If you notice that your car slips out of gear, this is a problem which poses a risk to both your safety and other people on the road. The computer system is what tells your car to switch gears. If there is a problem with your gears, this is probably where the issue is and it is best to get it checked out sooner rather than later.
